Guangzhou is formerly known as Canton, is economic, scientific, educational and cultural centre of Guangdong Province in South China and has a population of over 10 million (The official registered population is 7.3 million, with over 3 million unregistered residents). It is adjacent to Hong Kong and Macau. With a history of more than 2,000 years, it is now a transportation and communications hub and is dubbed the "Southern Gate of China."
Cantonese cuisine is well-known for its blend of colour, fragrance, taste and presentation, and it is ranked among the top four in the country. In particular, dim sum, a delicate pastry, is famous for being simple yet delicious. There are a variety of fine dinning restaurants in Guangzhou and surrounding area, like Guangzhou Restaurant, Datong restaurant and Lian Xiang Lou, and so on.
In the recent years, more and more restaurants of different styles have arisen, such as Southeast Asian style, Western style, Japanese style and fusion. In addition, foreign fast food, ice cream and coffee chains are well established. Visitors have a greater choice in Guangzhou now.
TEEMall is probably the busiest and most popular shopping mall in the heart of the city. It is located right above the metro station (Line 1 Yi Yu Xi Lu Station). Next to it, Grandbuy Plaza (also be known as Zhengjia Plaza) is the largest Western-style shopping mall in China.
Beijing Road Pedestrian Street is the main shopping thoroughfare, a pedestrian street where most stores are open from 9am to 10pm. Remember to visit Mayflower Plaza, at the northern end of the Pedestrian Street. This is a place where people hang out and shop.
China Plaza locates on top of a metro station (Line 1 Martyr’s Park), this is another large shopping mall with brand name department stores, clothing and electronics stores, restaurants, cinemas etc.
Pearl River dinner cruise is a one to two hour cruise in the evening and a great way to see the Guangzhou skyline along the Pearl River, including a light show at Bai-E-Tan. Travellers can get on the boat at Dashatou Pier, Tianzi Pier and Xiti Pier. Tickets for the deluxe dinner cruise can be bought from piers and most high-end hotels. (Fare from ¥50)
